We were complaining to each other all week about not being home for Thanksgiving this year. We listed all the things about it that we were missing: pie, turkey, potatoes, family, the atmosphere, pumpkins, colourful corn and gourd decorations, carrot soup...yup, all of it. Then Rachel was at the Canadian pub on Saturday night with a friend and they found out that the pub was serving Thanksgiving dinner on Monday night. Rachel and I checked it out again on Monday just to be sure, and they definitely were!
So, Monday night rolled around and we got all ready for our Thanksgiving dinner in Paris. We invited a German friend of ours from the residence along; it was her first Thanksgiving dinner. When we arrived at the pub, Rachel wanted a "family" picture in front of the pub. Kind of like being at home, you know? There was a young man standing in front in a plaid shirt (obviously not French, almost as obviously Canadian) and we asked him to take the picture. After he did, we asked him if he was Canadian, he said he was and that he was waiting for a few people from the hostel he was staying at to come and they were going to eat the Thanksgiving dinner that was advertised. We invited him and his friends to eat with us. So we ate Thanksgiving dinner with the four of us, Luc, Mitch and a couple of people they had met at the hostel. It was a good time.
The food was good. FIrst we had some very good carrot soup. Then each plate came with turkey & gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing and a little bit of cranberry sauce. Not as much of each as we had all expected, but it was all there. Dessert was a choice between pumpkin or pecan pie. Almost all of us chose the pumpkin pie. That's what I was most excited about. It ended up being a little disappointing. It was quite small and didn't taste quite right, but what can you expect? France can't make a better pumpkin pie than my Mom. And that's okay. It was a decent attempt at pumpkin pie, and that's better than no pie at all.
Good times.
Here are a few of us with our pieces of pie.
We have now been here for 27 days and 230 remain. That's my count and I'm sticking to it.
Grammar classes are going well and I'm enjoying them. Phonetics classes start this Thursday for me and I'm very much looking forward to them. Our lecture courses start next week. Then we'll finally be doing all the school that we came here for! It feels good to be back in classes again.
Happy Day-After-Thanksgiving-Weekend Day! I hope it's a good one. :)
